55,000 homes under council management – and growing

Southwark is a borough full of contrasts, something that’s exemplified in its housing stock. There is a huge range of properties, from luxury riverside apartments, large detached homes and new build apartments – to the flats and houses you’ll find on deprived estates.

Compared to other boroughs, Southwark has something different to offer housing professionals, and anyone else working in community development. With around 55,000 homes under Council management (including leaseholders), we are the largest local authority landlord in London and the fifth largest in the country. In fact, the council manages more than 40% of the borough’s housing: a figure much higher than the national average.

Southwark has not always been the best place to live, and too many of our residents still struggle to have a decent home, a good job and a healthy life. But we are changing that. So, there’s wide scope to build your experience and introduce innovative methods to tackle the barriers holding our communities back.

With the redevelopment of old estates like the Aylesbury on the horizon, there is much to achieve over the coming months and years.
