We've improved child literacy rates by 12%

Southwark has not always been the best place to grow up. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Council, and our partners, the future is now looking brighter for many children and young people in the borough.

Our progress is demonstrated by factors like the rise in child literacy across Key Stages 2 to 4 and the proportion of looked after young people achieving five or more grade A* to C GCSEs.  We’re very proud of the fact that 40 young people who were looked after by the borough are currently attending university.

We are dedicated to making up ground from early years right through to adulthood - we are addressing the needs of young people in the area by providing improved school and local facilities, as well as more responsive, targeted family support services.

There’s still a long way to go, however, which makes Southwark a great option for career-minded employees in children’s social work, youth work or education. The challenge is to continue the improvement that’s been made, while tackling the complex issues that arise in a borough full of contrasts.

By joining Southwark, you’ll become part of a team that’s working to make a difference to these young residents and looked after children, while helping to tackle inequality and the challenges our communities face.
