Throughout history, the people of Southwark have had an endless capacity to reinvent the borough. In recent times, the best example is the regeneration of Bankside. By the 70’s this former focus of world trade had become rundown and unloved. Yet today, it’s home to Shakespeare’s Globe, Tate Modern and a host of other attractions.
To bring jobs and prosperity, we are investing a huge amount of time and money into renewing the borough once again, The regeneration of the Elephant and Castle is the biggest news of all, as it represents the largest ever redevelopment scheme by a single borough. The renewal of the area – its homes, its shops, its roads and transport and its community life – is incredibly important to the future of the borough as a whole.
Over 40% of Southwark is covered by current or planned regeneration, which makes it a genuinely exciting place to live and work right now. Southwark is focussed on ensuring these major capital projects deliver our residents’ aspirations. But everyone at Southwark has their part to play in delivering better housing, better transport, more enterprise, more employment opportunities, better health and better education.
