Pay and Benefits

Salary

Your salary is paid into your bank or building society account on the 20th of each month (or the day before if the 20th falls on a weekend or Bank Holiday).

The salary is reviewed every year taking into account any decisions of the appropriate national and/or provincial negotiating machinery.

Pay Increments

Progression through the grade is by annual increments payable on the 1st April in each year until the maximum of the grade is reached. Progression is not automatic and is determined through assessment of your work performance and any other business considerations.

Annual leave

The basic annual leave entitlement is 26 days (or pro-rata), although this increases to 28 or 33 days dependent upon grade. Additional days are granted for long service according to continued service with this and other local authorities. In addition you are entitled to other statutory holidays.

The annual leave year runs from 1st April to 31st March the following year. While every effort is made to enable employees to take their annual leave at the time of their choice, all leave is subject to the exigencies of the service.

Hours of work

Jobs are based upon a 36-hour week, and most are open to "job-sharing".

Your manager will provide details of any attendance at activities in the evenings and weekends, and also any arrangements for variation of working hours and flexible working hours.

Pension scheme

The Local Government Superannuation Scheme is a public service pension scheme for council employees. Although membership is not compulsory, it is widely considered to offer an excellent range of guaranteed benefits.

Relocation and removal expenses

The payment of relocation and removal expenses may be considered for posts designated as "hard to fill", where a national shortage exists for the specific occupation. Each departmental Chief Officer will determine whether the post is eligible.

Training

Continued learning and development is important to the council. We believe in lifelong learning, enabling employees to develop their potential. Responsibility is shared between staff and their managers, who work together to identify training needs and agree personal development plans. The ultimate aim of learning and development is to improve service delivery, and where possible to meet your career and personal aspirations.

Flexible Working

We recognise that people work best when they have a satisfactory balance between their paid work and the remainder of their lives. You may need to accommodate care responsibilities, pursue further learning activities, or simply wish to have a greater choice about your leisure time.

With this in mind we have introduced a series of options to support a variety of work patterns. These include home working, flexi time, term time working, and compressed working week. This level of flexibility requires a team based approach to ensure that the needs of colleagues and the service are fully met.

Look out for details on adverts to see whether any of the options apply to your area of interest, or speak to the named contact for further information.
